Civilab is one of the most technically advanced civil engineering laboratories in South Africa.

The laboratory was established in the late 1960's and has been performing site investigations and testing for the entire spectrum of civil engineering projects throughout the southern region of Africa, and even further afield.

The combination of Civilab's wide range of specialised testing and geographically diversed operations provide the civil engineering and related industries the most comprehensive range of integrated advisory and technical services.

Services are specially tailored to meet client needs. They include structuring of testing programmes to meet particular design requirements, exploration of suitable building materials, laboratory- and field-testing, and technical supervision on construction sites. Resolving problems in collaboration with the client is an important aspect of the laboratory’s activities.

Civilab’s operation in Johannesburg is a SANAS accredited testing laboratory in accordance with the ISO 17025 procedures, which include structured proficiency testing programmes and frequent internal and external assessments, ensuring consistent reliable laboratory results.

Management systems in accordance with Regulations 52 for “temporary laboratories” have been reviewed by SANAS and are presently being implemented at roads construction quality control site laboratories in the Eastern Cape.

The company’s wide range of laboratory and technical services is further complemented by the operations of its sister companies:

  • Soilco, a KwaZulu-Natal based SANAS accredited civil engineering testing laboratory
  • Ninham Shands Geotechnical Laboratory in Cape Town
  • Labco, a SANAS accredited civil engineering testing laboratory in Port Elizabeth
  • SPECIALIST ROAD TECHNOLOGIES, a specialised bitumen laboratory and road surveillance service company, operating from Durban and Pretoria

Civilab has training programmes in place for the advancement of its entire staff.

The laboratory was voted one of South Africa’s top 300 black empowerment companies by its peers in 2000. The Impumelelo award was made to the company in recognition of its status as a pioneer in black empowerment and an innovative company within its market.
